2019 is nearly here.
Traditionally New Year is a time for reflection. What’s happened over the last year, good and bad. What would you do differently if you had your chance again?
Well guess what – you have the opportunity to start fresh and make 2019 your best year yet.
What’s a resolution?
Resolutions are people deciding they’re going to change – get rid of an undesirable trait or habit, or set goals and aspirations they want to meet, or generally improve their life.
For example “I resolve to get fitter” or “I resolve to read more”.
The most common thing about New Year’s Resolutions? Is that they tend to be abandoned very soon after the start of the New Year.
So, if you’re going to make some resolutions, then good on you. If make them realistic and achievable, then you’re more likely to be able to stick with them.
That means more to celebrate and be proud about at the end of next year.
If you’re keen to make 2019 a ripper year but you just don’t know how, we’ve put together a few resolutions that could benefit you.
- Take care of yourself
Without good physical and mental wellbeing, then you’re behind the eight ball already.
So eat more fruit and veggies, drink 2 litres of water a day, and make sure you get at least 8 hours sleep a night. If you’re not a naturally sporty person, then make time to get a bit of exercise each week too.
As for your mental health, be kind to yourself – learn to like yourself, be mindful (focus on the here and now, be present, enjoy yourself), and try not to stress about the things you can’t change.
Also resolve to ask for help if you need it.
- Study smarter not harder
Get better grades without sending yourself loopy.
There are a few ways you can try to achieve that. Resolve to be prepared, don’t procrastinate & get assignments and revision done sooner rather than later.
Again, if you aren’t coping or you don’t understand – ask for help.
- Get organised
Get a calendar or an app, enter everything into it and don’t forget to use your reminders and alarms for the important stuff. From birthdays and catch ups, to events and deadlines. When you know what’s on your schedule you can comfortably work around them and plan ahead.
It may not sound like that much fun, but it will actually help you fit more in (even if that’s more sleep-ins), and feel less stressed out – no forgetting important things until the last minute.
- Be optimistic
At first it can be an effort to see the positives. If you keep trying, you’ll find after a while it becomes automatic and you’ll probably feel much happier and more able to cope with whatever life throws at you.
- Start thinking about your resume
If you haven’t already, make this year the time to focus on your resume.
Design it, type it up and concentrate on thinking about the skills and qualities that you need to put on there to impress universities and employers.
Then get to work on up-skilling and getting in practise or experience that will really make you resume stand out.
- Step back from technology
If you love gaming or are mad about social media try limiting yourself a bit more and spending the time you would normally be engaging in those activities doing something else.
You could exercise, catch up with friends (as in literally hang out with them not check their Instagram), spend time with family, read a great book, go to the movies or try something new.
You might find that you feel happier and you’ll definitely have more time to get stuff done.
A clean slate – write the new chapter of you
Try new things, think about careers you might be interested in finding our more about, check out Uni’s or apprenticeships you’re interested in, find out ways you can volunteer, plan your gap year – just have fun.
It doesn’t matter what you do, just make the most of your year.
