Visit somewhere not even on a map

Thinking of heading off the beaten track in your gap year, or simply want to have some adventure on your next holiday?

Then the largely unknown tropical, jungle covered, Islands of Sao Tome and Principe off the West African coast could be exactly what you’re looking for.

South African billionaire Mark Shuttleworth has dedicated himself to helping the islands develop in a sustainable manner. He has bought all the exisiting island hotels (and built some more), and started gardens and orchards to grow the produce used in the hotels’ restaurants and spas. There are also recycling facilities to deal with the waste, including a craft studio that makes jewellery from trash.

The hotels sound quite exclusive, so you might have to work extra hard to afford a visit to these islands, but it sounds like it would be well worth the effort, and none of your mates are likely to have been.
