Start your Teaching Career at High School

If you’re keen on a career in the classroom, there are plenty of opportunities available to start your teaching journey while you’re still at school.

You can start by studying university subjects in Year 11 or 12. Some of the unis offering these programs include:

You can also study uni subjects at school through the Future Teachers Program – ask your school if they participate in the program to join.

The Queensland Government also offers a Future Teachers Bursary to help cover the cost of uni at school courses and some study related expenses. Once you leave school, they also offer a range of scholarships and grants for students at uni, and further into your career.

Or if you’re not quite ready to study uni subjects yet, you can join the Future Teachers Club, with activities that let you explore what a career in teaching is all about. Ask your school if they run the program (or alternatively careers advisors can find out more info about running it at your school here).

There are also several pathways and programs available to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.

View the steps you can take towards your teaching career with their roadmap, no matter if you’re still at school, finishing up, or already at uni.
