Indigenous Career Stories in Nursing

Indigenous nurses could provide cultural connections, that ultimately result in better outcomes for their indigenous patients.

Find out about some the career opportunities in Nursing and Midwifery within the Murrumbidgee Health District.

 

Angela Damn is a Clinical Nurse Specialist providing support and leadership to other indigenous nursing staff.

“Creating a culturally safe space, where we can all come to work and be proud of who we are, as well as creating an environment that’s comfortable for my people to come in and realise our services.”

Alana Nixon is a Registered Nurse. She began her career working in an Aboriginal Medical Services Clinic, saw the work RN’s were doing and decided to qualify herself.

“It provides a lot of comfort for the indigenous population to see a fellow indigenous nurse looking after them, it closes the gap in communication, and it provides better health outcomes for the patient.”

“It’s a very rewarding career and there are lots of opportunities.”

Amy Byrom is an Enrolled Nurse working in the Aboriginal Maternal Infant Health Service undertaken additional aboriginal health practitioner training, she says:

“I love that I can help bringing in these special little babies into this world”
