Financial and health support for young people

Becoming independent from your parents or carers can be exciting and scary at the same time. While it’s nice to have a bit more freedom, there are some responsibilities you will need to take care of as well, like finances and your health.

Luckily, there is heaps of support out there for young people who are becoming independent. If you’re wanting to study or do an apprenticeship or traineeship, there are payments like Youth Allowance or ABSTUDY to help you out.

Need to move away from home or need help with transport costs? You might also be eligible for the Tertiary Access Payment, Relocation Scholarship or Fares Allowance.

If you have a medical condition or disability, you may also be able to get the Disability Support Pension.

Another important thing to consider is your health. You can get your own Medicare card from 15 years old. This will help you access discounted healthcare and other benefits.
