Where the jobs are

There are lots of industries you can work in, but not all of them are the same size.

The largest industry in Australia is Health Care and Social Assistance, which is expected to employ over 2 million people by November 2025. In contrast, the smallest industry (electricity, gas, water, and waste) will employ around 164,000 people at the end of 2025.

The size of an industry does not correlate directly with your chances of getting a job, so if you’ve got your heart set on one of the smaller industries completely ignore this article. If, however, you’re more concerned about increasing your chances of finding a job, then you may want to know where the jobs are most likely to be.

We know some jobs are growing faster than others within each industry – for example, the Accommodation and Food Services sector is growing, but most of the jobs are as waiters and store or restaurant managers, while the number of workers who sell tickets or maintain vending machines is in decline.
