In a world that thrives on diversity and inclusivity, it’s important to create an environment where everyone feels accepted and celebrated for who they are. May 17th was the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Interphobia, and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT). It provides a platform to raise awareness about the challenges faced by the LGBTQIA+ community and promote understanding and acceptance.
For young people, IDAHOBIT offers a unique opportunity to demonstrate their support and solidarity with their LGBTQIA+ friends. In this blog, we’ll explore some ways that young people can lend their support.
Educate yourself
One of the most powerful steps you can take to support your LGBTQIA+ friends is to educate yourself about different sexual orientations, gender identities, and the challenges faced by the community. Read books, articles, and blogs written by LGBTQIA+ authors, follow LGBTQIA+ activists and influencers on social media, and engage in respectful conversations to deepen your understanding. By becoming knowledgeable, you will be better equipped to challenge stereotypes, debunk myths, and advocate for equality.
Be an ally
Being an ally means actively standing up for and supporting your LGBTQIA+ friends. Speak out against discrimination or derogatory language, both online and offline. Offer a listening ear and create a safe space where your friends can be open and honest about their experiences. Attend LGBTQIA+ events, marches, or rallies to show solidarity and amplify their voices. Remember, being an ally is an ongoing commitment to learning, growing, and actively promoting inclusivity.
Practice inclusivity in language
Language holds immense power, and the words we choose can either uplift or harm. Practice using gender-inclusive language, such as “they/them” pronouns, to respect individuals whose gender identities may fall outside the traditional binary. Avoid assuming someone’s sexual orientation or gender identity based on their appearance or other assumptions. By using inclusive language, you create a welcoming environment where everyone feels seen and respected.
Support LGBTQIA+ organisations
Many organisations dedicated to LGBTQIA+ rights and support exist worldwide. Take the initiative to research and support these organisations through donations, volunteering, or spreading awareness about their work. Encourage your school or community to create partnerships with LGBTQIA+ organisations to foster a supportive environment. By actively supporting these organisations, you contribute to the empowerment and wellbeing of the LGBTQIA+ community as a whole.
Be a friend
Sometimes, the most impactful support you can offer is simply being a friend. LGBTQIA+ individuals often face unique challenges and may experience feelings of isolation or rejection. Be there to listen, offer empathy, and provide a non-judgmental space where they can share their thoughts and emotions. Celebrate their milestones, attend LGBTQIA+ gatherings together, and let them know that you value their presence in your life.
As young people, you have the power to shape a more inclusive world by actively supporting our LGBTQIA+ friends – not just on IDAHOBIT, but every day. By educating ourselves, being allies, practising inclusive language, supporting LGBTQIA+ organisations, and simply being there as friends, we can make a meaningful impact.
Remember, small actions can create ripples of change that transform lives. Together, we can build a society where love, respect, and equality prevail.
