What do they do?

A Firefighter’s primary job roles are to respond to fires, accidents and other emergencies including chemical spills and rescues

Non-office based and physically demanding, this career would be rewarding on many levels. If you’re the kind of person who likes to be hands on and can’t imagine sitting down all day long, it’s worth looking into.

Duties:

  • Road accident rescue
  • Swiftwater and technical rescue
  • Management of hazardous materials
  • Community education
  • Building inspections
  • Station and equipment maintenance

  • Community commitment
  • Adaptability

Prerequisites for selection test applications (what the fire service could expect you to have before you apply)

Manual Drivers license

Pass medical and fitness test

2 years paid work experience

Citizenship

Completion of Year 12  or equivalent

Pathways

Apply through your State Fire Service or through the Australian Defence Force

Meet all of the pre-requisites and successfully pass the Fire Service’s intensive selection process

Complete Recruit Course

Complete 12 month probationary period
