There’s more to work than industries. That’s why it doesn’t make sense to only group jobs by the industries they’re found in.ย
We’ve built on research from the Foundation for Young Australians to define six Career Clusters that group people based on their key tasks, core technical and transferrable skills, and common outcomes. You’ll find people from each cluster within each industry.ย
It’s a different way of thinking about jobs, and with the Career Clusters it’s easier to look beyond the most popular jobs in each industry, and understand the diversity of jobs on offer.ย

Each cluster is unique
Maker
Makers create and maintain the places where we live and work. They grow crops, build homes, repair vehicles, and keep the power on.
Linker
Linkers help us find, choose, secure, and use things. They can help us with products and physical items, or with the services and support we need.
Guardian
Guardians protect our mental and physical wellbeing. They help us care for our health, and guard against illness and injury. They also seek solutions to health issues.
Informer
Informers advise, teach, and guide us so we can learn the things we need to know. With their help, we can manage our legal, social, and financial responsibilities, and participate in society.
Coordinator
Coordinators are the people who plan, prepare, and administer our events, systems and economy. They play a vital role in making sure everything runs smoothly.
Innovator
Innovators design, engineer, and manufacture things we use in all areas of our lives, from the clothes we wear, to the food we eat, the homes we live in and the roads we drive on.
Create, maintain, grow
Makers
They work with their hands, and use their skills to fix, mend, create, inspect, maintain, grow, and move. Makers are skilled at using tools and equipment, and have a responsibility for maintaining the safety of their work site for themselves and others.ย
They work in a variety of locations, depending on their industry, which may include industrial and commercial sites, large building projects, on farms in agricultural settings, or as tradespeople in residential homes.ย

Support, sell, serve
Linkers
They support others to find the things we need and manage our purchases, services, recreation, and travel. Linkers are skilled at helping others, managing relationships, and working with other industry professionals, and they need strong communication skills and a healthy dose of patience and resilience.ย
Linkers often work in hospitality, retail, business, and any workplace where there is a need to interact with members of the public.ย
Protect and care for wellbeing
Guardians
They use their skills to support other people to maintain and care for their health and wellbeing. Guardians are skilled at supporting people and they have a deep understanding of physical and mental health.ย
Many Guardians work in healthcare, the fitness and beauty industries, and others help keep our workplaces and public spaces safe.ย

Advise, educate, guide
Informers
Informers use their industry specific expertise to support others to learn, develop, create, protect, account, research, and analyse. Informers are skilled at helping others and have a deep knowledge of their chosen area, as well as extensive experience.ย
Informers use their skills in every industry, but particularly in education, financial and business services, legal services, politics, intelligence, and the arts.ย
Organise, plan, control
Coordinators
They support all industries to manage, monitor, move, and maintain their systems, so things run smoothly. They are skilled at maintaining schedules, strategic planning, and are also often responsible for organising others in their team.ย
Coordinators are found in every industry, and work at all levels of an organisation, from data entry through to senior management.ย

Design, engineer, develop
Innovators
They design, innovate, and create the things, tools, places and systems we use to live our lives, and work with cutting edge technology to protect, develop, solve, and maintain technological systems.
Innovators design everything from buildings to aircraft, vaccines, and software, and their creations are used in every industry.ย
