Maths and analysis

Mathematical scientists use data and analytics to solve real-world problems, and this is a highly specialised industry. You’ll usually need a university level qualification to work in this industry, although you could start with a Diploma or Science if you need an alternative pathway.

Engineering

Engineers design, create and implement systems and infrastructure to help us run our lives. A university degree in Engineering will require good marks and an emphasis on maths, but you can also get a VET qualification or start with an engineering apprenticeship.

PR

Work with the public and spread your brand’s message with a career in public relations. You don’t need any qualifications to get started in this field, but a degree or diploma could improve your employability.

Community Health

Community Health professionals work to improve the health of communities across Australia. You could find yourself working in local health programs, consulting on policy, or tackling endemic health issues.

Police

You don’t necessarily require a degree to join the police, although university qualifications (in any field, not just policing and justice) can boost your chances of getting in. You should look at the requirements for the police force you want to join.

Land Management

Land Management is also known as Conservation or Environmental Management. Many land management agencies offer traineeships, or you could specialise with a university degree or VET course.

Mining

Mining is a growing industry, and you can get started with just a traineeship, but more advanced qualifications include at university level will allow you to apply for more varied roles.

Network Admin

Design, build, support and maintain ICT networks using your skills in programming, mathematics and telecommunications. Entry-level roles may require a diploma and relevant programming skills, and you could progress to a university degree.

Project Management

Project Managers are highly organised people who make sure any project runs smoothly. You’ll generally need a degree to find a job, but could start with a VET qualification and gain experience before moving into project management.

Teaching

To become a teacher you’ll need a degree, and will need to meet maths and English requirements and prove your fitness to teach. To become a teacher’s aide or work in early childhood you could start a traineeship or seek a VET course.

Restaurants and Bars

Find a fast-paced job in the food and beverage industry. You won’t need a qualification to get started, but you could specialise with a degree in restaurant management, formal chef training, or even start your own business.

Fitness

Help others maintain their fitness as a coach, trainer, outdoor educator, or even manage your own gym. A diploma in sports and fitness could help you kick start your career, or you could specialise with a university level qualification in fitness management or a related health science.

Tourism and Travel

Help people plan their trips, ensure their stay is comfortable, and enable access to tourist hotspots with a career in this industry. You won’t need any qualifications to get started, but a diploma or degree could improve your employability and give you access to more advanced roles.

Entertainment

Work in theatre, film, fine art, dance, opera, music, literary publishing, television, radio, or even gaming. Some roles will require specialist skills and formal VET qualifications, and a university degree could increase your employability.

Dance

You could perform or become a dance teacher, choreographer, an actor or other entertainer. You’ll need highly specialised dance skills and qualifications, and a VET qualification or degree could help expand your options in other related areas.

Outdoor Recreation

Outdoor recreation and education is a rapidly growing field, and you could work in the tourism and recreation sector. You may not need formal qualifications, but specific outdoor recreation skills, eg. rock-climbing, could be beneficial. A VET qualification or degree could also help you find a role.

Landscape Design

Roles in this industry vary from highly specialised, university qualified landscape architects through to garden maintenance crews. To take on more advanced roles you may need a VET qualification in landscape design or horticulture, or seek out a degree.

Urban Planning

Plan and design the cities and urban spaces of the future. You’ll need a university degree to work in this field, and may need to specialise after your initial degree.

Graphic Design

Work with colour, shape and design and create visual elements for marketing and social media. A VET design qualification or degree in Graphic Design will improve your employability, and you’ll also need industry-specific technology skills.

Web Design

Web designers create online experiences for brands, businesses and organisations. You will need industry-specific skills to begin your career, and you can study web design at a VET or university level or gain the required skills through experience.

Logistics

Be part of the system that moves goods and people around Australia and the world. Logistics management often requires university qualifications, but there are entry-level roles available such as picking/packing and warehousing.

Finance

Manage financial assets and help others plan financial strategies with a career in this field. To provide any kind of financial, accounting or bookkeeping service you’ll need at least a Cert IV, and a university level qualification could help you go further.

Sales and Marketing

Help brands sell their products and services through marketing and customer service. There are many entry-level roles in sales which require no qualifications, but if you want access to more advanced roles a diploma or degree in marketing could be helpful.

Arts and Recreation

The Arts and Recreation industry is diverse and includes things like museums, zoos, parks, botanical gardens, as well as the creative and performing arts, professional and recreational sports, amusement centres and casinos.
