These professions are usually in high demand, and numbers of employees are remaining relatively steady, so you may find it somewhat more difficult to secure a role than you would in other industries.
However, with a growing population and older (baby boomer) staff retiring in larger numbers, we can expect demand to continue to grow over the coming years.
Some of these roles (particularly for firefighters) are highly competitive and require a lengthy and arduous selection process, so be prepared to work hard if you want one of the available spots.
Do you have what it takes?
Emergency services personnel need to be able to think and act for themselves. While you’ll often work in pairs (Ambulance) and in small teams (Fire & Rescue), there will be many times in your career where you’re ‘the only person there’, requiring you to be confident, knowledgeable and decisive.
Acting in a front-line role will demand that you face situations that could be frightening, dangerous and demanding. But the benefits of helping other people (and being a highly respected member of society) are incredibly rewarding.
- Great problems solving skills
- Comfortable with stressful situations
- Strong interpersonal skills
- Strong teamwork skills
