Government

There are thousands of roles in many different areas, but government roles can be exciting and give you the opportunity to serve your community. You could start with a traineeship with your local council, or study governance, politics or international relations at university.

Border Security

To work in Border Security and Customs you’ll need to have finished Year 12 or Year 10 and a Cert IV, plus you’ll have to go through their stringent selection process.

Agriculture and Aquaculture

You won’t need any qualifications to begin work as a farm hand, but if you’d like to specialise or gain access to more advanced roles then you’ll need a VET or university level qualification.

Beauty

Help others feel amazing and look their best with a career in haircare or beauty therapy. An apprenticeship or traineeship could help you get started, and you could take a VET course or on the job training to increase your employability. University-level qualifications in nursing or cosmetic care could also be useful.

Fitness

Help others maintain their fitness as a coach, trainer, outdoor educator, or even manage your own gym. A diploma in sports and fitness could help you kick start your career, or you could specialise with a university level qualification in fitness management or a related health science.

Tourism and Travel

Help people plan their trips, ensure their stay is comfortable, and enable access to tourist hotspots with a career in this industry. You won’t need any qualifications to get started, but a diploma or degree could improve your employability and give you access to more advanced roles.

IT Support

Help individuals and organisations manage their software and online systems. You can find courses at the diploma and degree level which will give you the skills and knowledge you need to start your career.

Administration

Help organisations run smoothly and be responsible for managing day to day operations. You can learn on the job, start with a traineeship, or study business and administration at university.

Property and Real Estate

To work in real estate you’ll need to take a short course and register in your state. You could also benefit from a course in sales and marketing, or can study property at university if you choose.

Trades

Trades include carpentry, plumbing, automotive, masonry, and construction among others. You’ll generally be able to start with an apprenticeship, but if you can’t find one you can study a trade through a VET provider or TAFE.

Libraries

Work in school, community, university, or institutional libraries, and help people locate and use the information they need. Qualified librarians need a degree or diploma, but you could find a job as a library assistant to get started.

Restaurants and Bars

Find a fast-paced job in the food and beverage industry. You won’t need a qualification to get started, but you could specialise with a degree in restaurant management, formal chef training, or even start your own business.

Art

Create, curator, teach, or sell art. Some roles, such as school art teacher or gallery curator, require formal qualifications, and you may find that a VET course or university degree in fine art helps bring in more work.

Dance

You could perform or become a dance teacher, choreographer, an actor or other entertainer. You’ll need highly specialised dance skills and qualifications, and a VET qualification or degree could help expand your options in other related areas.

Outdoor Recreation

Outdoor recreation and education is a rapidly growing field, and you could work in the tourism and recreation sector. You may not need formal qualifications, but specific outdoor recreation skills, eg. rock-climbing, could be beneficial. A VET qualification or degree could also help you find a role.

Manufacturing

Roles in this industry vary from highly specialised technical roles through to assembly-line production. While you can start in some roles with on the job training, look for manufacturing traineeships and consider upgrading your skills with engineering qualifications.

Industrial Design

Design and create the items we use in our lives. You may be able to start with a VET qualification, depending on the sub-industry, but most roles require a university degree.
