Research new treatments and work with doctors, pharmacologists, biomedical scientists and other professionals. Most jobs require university level qualifications, but there are some roles for lab and research assistants which start with a traineeship.
Community Health
Community Health professionals work to improve the health of communities across Australia. You could find yourself working in local health programs, consulting on policy, or tackling endemic health issues.
Allied Health
Allied health professionals work alongside doctors and other health practitioners to prevent, diagnose and treat a range of conditions. You could work as a physiotherapist, podiatrist, dentist, dietitian, midwife, or sonographer, for example.
Mental Health
Support individuals to care for their mental health with a career in this field. Some roles, such as psychology, require a high level of university education, and you’ll need to study English at school to qualify. You could also get started with a mental health or counselling degree or certificate.
ADF
Enjoy an exciting career with the defence forces. You’ll need to have finished Year 10 and meet their other entry criteria, and to become an officer you will need to meet additional requirements and may need a university degree.
Police
You don’t necessarily require a degree to join the police, although university qualifications (in any field, not just policing and justice) can boost your chances of getting in. You should look at the requirements for the police force you want to join.

Land Management
Land Management is also known as Conservation or Environmental Management. Many land management agencies offer traineeships, or you could specialise with a university degree or VET course.
HR and Recruitment
Recruitment specialists find new staff for their own or other organisations, and Human Resource staff manage existing staff. It may be possible to work in recruitment with no formal qualification, but most roles in HR will require a university level qualification.
Teaching
To become a teacher you’ll need a degree, and will need to meet maths and English requirements and prove your fitness to teach. To become a teacher’s aide or work in early childhood you could start a traineeship or seek a VET course.
Workplace Training and Assessment
This field of adult education is growing, as organisations look to improve the way they onboard and upskill their staff. You will most likely need a VET or university qualification, depending on the field you want to work in.
Network Admin
Design, build, support and maintain ICT networks using your skills in programming, mathematics and telecommunications. Entry-level roles may require a diploma and relevant programming skills, and you could progress to a university degree.
Music
While many roles will require industry-specific music knowledge (such as the ability to play your instrument) you may not need formal qualifications. A diploma or degree could help your career, and you’ll need formal qualifications to teach or work as a music therapist.
Events
Organise and host exhibitions, shows, conferences, weddings, performances, festivals and community events. There are entry-level roles available, but most people in this industry have a VET qualification or degree.
Urban Planning
Plan and design the cities and urban spaces of the future. You’ll need a university degree to work in this field, and may need to specialise after your initial degree.
Aviation
To become a pilot you’ll need to go through flight training, and could also study aviation at university. You could also work as a technician, in air traffic control, or as a flight steward, all of which require specialised training.
Finance
Manage financial assets and help others plan financial strategies with a career in this field. To provide any kind of financial, accounting or bookkeeping service you’ll need at least a Cert IV, and a university level qualification could help you go further.
Sales and Marketing
Help brands sell their products and services through marketing and customer service. There are many entry-level roles in sales which require no qualifications, but if you want access to more advanced roles a diploma or degree in marketing could be helpful.
Law
Help people resolve disputes and understand their rights with a career in law. You may not need any qualifications to begin your career as a legal assistant, but a university degree is required for most legal roles.
